Whether you’re dealing with food cravings, tobacco cravings, or any other craving, there’s an easy trick to help. It’s so simple that it seems too easy: DRINK WATER.
A typical craving lasts between 3 and 5 minutes. When you notice one coming on, head to the kitchen, and chug 8-16 ounces of water. Drinking water causes our brain to release feel-good, happy endorphins. If we didn’t get positive reinforcement like this, we may well have died out as a species due to a lack of desire to drink this life-giving liquid. I recommend that all of patients carry around a stainless steel water bottle, so that it’s always on hand. The next time a craving has you in panic-mode, try this out, and tell me how it goes in the comments.
